Lots of little things going on.

Started a podcast. I feel dirty just saying the word. Screenwriting in Linux is a very under served market so I dove headlong in to it regardless of whether I'm actually qualified to be talking to anyone about it. I started a new site for it. Since I don't know how long this will go on for I opted to have Blogger host the basic site and have the Internet Archive host the audio files.

If you're terribly bored or just masochistic you can find swilcast at swilcast.blogspot.com

I'm working on rewriting/editing Sid for Praxis. I should have a new draft ready in the next week or so. I've already got a list of people interested in reading through it. If you'd like to be on that list shoot me an email. Click my name at the bottom of any post.

I've got a very quick short, under 2 minutes, that I'm really interested in doing. I'm still scouting locations trying to find the right location. I think I've got it now I just need my cast. It's two primary actors with as many extras as I can find. Yes, it's zombie but more it's dark comedy.

Actually getting in to production on this is being pushed off a bit. I've, for the most part, been ready to jump right in. With my wife ready to go in to labour I've avoided getting too deep in to anything. I'd really hate to be on location, have 20 people who have come out to support the shoot, and then bail part way through. Probably better if I just wait for my little girl to be born.

Ed Video Media Arts Centre in Guelph has a free movie making program geared towards beginners. I may be quite deep in the writing side but the production and technical side I definitely need quite a bit of work on. Interruptions for the forthcoming child aside this is pretty likely on my plate for the immediate future.

Script Frenzy is done. I finished it on time. The Celtx Forum Community film is done. I finished it on time. Next up, or at least the next major project, is the Praxis Screenwriting Competition. I'm interested in Praxis because it's not the typical cash grab that so many competitions are. I don't really see the point of competitions which are almost entirely centered around a cash prize. If that's what they think contestants care about then it really illustrated what the organizers are worried about. I really dig Praxis because it's the opposite direction entirely.

Praxis winners are brought to Vancouver to work with veteran writers and editors to focus on the next step. The focus is on the writing. That's far more beneficial to me than cash.

I had every intention of entering last year but fell short for the same reasons as always. I didn't feel that I was ready. Didn't think I had the material that could win. Didn't want to get my hopes up and not make it. The same old shit that I always go through in helping to defeat myself long before I even get off the ground. Not so this year. I have a script, I know what I'm doing, and I'm going to enter. That's the end of that.

The script I have settled on, and will spend the next five weeks working with, is Sid. I'm really glad I came back to this script. I forgot how much I enjoyed working on it and have really enjoyed my first read through. If you want to read it and let me know what you think that'd be cool. If you're interested in helping me along there is a very easy way that you can do so. I have five questions you can answer that would help me immensely.

  • Read the first ten pages. Do you feel compelled, based on the first ten pages, to continue reading? Are you intrigued enough by those pages to continue on?
  • Is there a character that doesn't work for you?
  • Is there a scene or scenario that doesn't work for you?
  • Is there a character you really like?
  • Is there a scene or scenario that really grabbed you?

[ i made this for you ]

A woman tries to get some distance from a bad situation. The person at the centre of the problem continues to call her to offer excuses she's not interested in listening to. She just needs some time to process. When the calls won't stop she finds an index card in her steering wheel. Sometimes all you need is a stranger to tell you something you already know.

This was filmed for the Celtx Forum Community Film project outlined here.

This was very much a learning film for me and a good exercise. I have two pages of point form notes on the things I didn't do and the things I shouldn't have done.

[ down on the farm ]

Forced out of his sanctuary through betrayal, Jared is forced out in to open country as the zombie apocalypse continues around him. He stumbles upon a fenced in, self sufficient farm. The troubles come from within and outside of the fence as well as from Jared's past.

Written for the 2009 Script Frenzy this was written during the month of April. This is a raw, as written draft. This is a warts and all with zero edits or proofs made. I assume there are spelling and grammar issues. In some cases I may have omitted words here and there.
